Celebrating Success: Dalton Lester, 2024 Wyoming County Community Fund Scholarship Winner

In a heartening testament to resilience and ambition, the Wyoming County Economic Development Authority and the Wyoming County Planning Commission proudly announce Dalton Lester as the recipient of the 2024 Wyoming County Community Fund Scholarship. Dalton, a senior at Westside High School, embodies the spirit of perseverance and community dedication that this scholarship aims to support.

A Journey of Perseverance

Dalton’s story is one of triumph over adversity. Despite facing a challenging childhood before he was adopted, Dalton has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to building a better future. Throughout his high school years, he has maintained a GPA of 3.0 or higher each semester, showcasing his dedication to academic excellence.

In addition to his scholastic achievements, Dalton has made significant contributions to his community. His community service includes hours spent on various tasks such as lawn care, pressure washing, painting, oil changes, and babysitting. These efforts not only highlight his strong work ethic but also his willingness to support and uplift those around him.

Educational Aspirations

With the assistance of the Wyoming County Community Fund Scholarship, Dalton plans to continue his education at the Wyoming County Career and Technical Center (WCCTC). In May, he graduated from Westside High School with a certificate in automotive technology from WCCTC. Dalton’s educational journey will not stop there; he plans to pursue further certifications in electrical and welding over the next two years.

These additional certifications are part of Dalton’s broader career goal to secure employment at a coal preparation plant in Wyoming County. His ambition is to not only build a successful career for himself but also to contribute to the local economy. Dalton’s life-long dream is to work hard, achieve success, and create the life he has always envisioned.

Supporting Community and Education

The Wyoming County Community Fund Scholarship, administered by the Beckley Area Foundation (BAF), is dedicated to fostering educational growth among the residents of Wyoming County. This scholarship provides $1,250 for both the Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 academic semesters, supporting students like Dalton in their pursuit of higher education and career readiness.

Eligibility for this scholarship requires applicants to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, demonstrate prior work experience or community service, and meet other specified criteria. The application process includes a three-page narrative where candidates must articulate their qualifications, educational goals, and ideas for stimulating the local economy.
