Celebrating Creativity: Enter the 2026 Wyoming County Writing Contest

The Wyoming County Economic Development Authority (EDA) is proud to support and promote opportunities that celebrate the creativity, history, and voices of our community. One of the most inspiring of these opportunities is the Wyoming County Writing Contest, made possible through the Wyoming County Literature Fund—founded by local author Lonnie Bailey.

Now entering its sixth year, this annual competition continues to encourage writers of all ages and experience levels to share their stories, reflect on their heritage, and contribute to the cultural fabric of Wyoming County.

Honoring a Legacy of Storytelling

The Wyoming County Literature Fund was established through the generosity of Lonnie Bailey, a Wyoming County native and accomplished author. With 22 books to his name—most of them poetry—Bailey’s work has been published in more than 130 anthologies and recognized with numerous national and international honors. His dedication to the written word and to his home community has created a lasting legacy that now inspires others to explore their own creativity.

Managed in partnership with the Beckley Area Foundation, one of West Virginia’s largest community foundations, the Literature Fund ensures that support for the arts and storytelling in Wyoming County will continue for generations to come.

Who Can Participate?

The writing contest is open to all Wyoming County residents, including:

  • Elementary students (grades 1–5)
  • Middle school students (grades 6–8)
  • High school students (grades 9–12)
  • Adults (18+)

Public, private, and homeschool students are all encouraged to participate. Whether you’re a first-time writer or a seasoned storyteller, this contest offers a platform to share your voice.

Categories, Prizes, and Recognition

Awards are based on the merit of each submission, with multiple prizes available in each category. Elementary students can earn first, second, and third place awards, while middle school, high school, and adult categories each offer first and second place prizes.

Top awards include up to $500 in the adult category, along with medals for winners. Every participant will receive a certificate of participation, recognizing their effort and contribution.

Submission Guidelines

Entries must be original, unpublished work and should follow standard formatting guidelines, including typed submissions in 12-point font and double spacing. Word count requirements vary by grade level, with a minimum of 1,000 words for most categories (elementary students have a lower minimum), and a maximum of 5,000 words. Poetry submissions are also welcome and do not have a word requirement.

To ensure fairness, the author’s name should not appear on the submission itself but should be included on a separate page along with category and school information (if applicable).

Important Dates

Entries must be submitted by May 1, 2026. Submissions can be mailed or emailed to the Wyoming County Planning Commission. Winners will be announced in early summer.

Inspiring the Next Generation

For younger participants, the contest also offers creative prompts centered around life in Wyoming County—encouraging students to reflect on their favorite places, local history, and ways to make their community even stronger.

Building on Success

The 2025 contest showcased incredible talent across all age groups, with winning entries highlighting everything from local landmarks to personal reflections and community pride. These stories not only celebrate individual creativity but also help preserve the unique identity of Wyoming County.
